Leverett Wins Southern Oaks by 4 Strokes in British Open Conditions

Clay Leverett, a 1.3 handicap from Ft. Worth, fired a front nine 34 on what started as a nice day before 30mph north winds and a cold pelting rain descended on the field of 21 players at Southern Oaks GC. His back nine 38 under MOST difficult conditions was easily good enough for the victory with a net score of 70.7 and a total of $1430, nearly 10 times his entry fee. Some players did not finish (I can't say that I blame them) while others choked down their pride and turned in scores 10 - 15 strokes higher than their usual round. The good news for those players is their scores will go into the system and count for their handicap...which can't hurt with spring and better weather just around the corner. Bad weather players may reap the benefits of a higher handicap and easier conditions, a double bonus when spring arrives along with fair weather golfers who still have fair weather handicaps!
